Edakkal Caves is located atop the Ambukuthi Mala, a short but exhausting trek from the Edakkal Town.
Kozhikode to Edakkal Caves: From Kozhikode side to reach Edakkal, take the Thamarassery route. You can travel either via the Mysore route (NH212) or Gudalur route.
For the Mysore route,on NH212 take the right diversion to Ambalavayal at Kolagappara. This diversion comes after Meenangadi on the highway.
If you prefer the Gudalur route , exit NH 212 at Chundale town, just before Kalpetta. Cross Meppadi and take the left diversion to Ambalavayal at Vaduvanchal.
Both routes are more or less same in distance. Select the route based on your itineraries of the trip. A number of attractions in south Wayanad is accessible via the Gudalur route. (See routes and distances from Kozhikode to places in Wayanad.)
Malappuram to Edakkal Caves: Take the Nadugani route, if you are traveling from Malappuram or Nilambur side. You need to enter Tamilnadu and re-enter Kerala. Private vehicles don't have to pay entry tax. However if you are hiring commercial transport, there are permit fees to be paid at RTO. Nilambur-Nadugani-Edakkal distance is about 80km.
After entering Kerala from Nadugani, drive towards Kalpetta. Leave the Kalpetta road and take the right diversion at Cherambadi or Vaduvanchal. Either way, travel towards Ambalavayal and then to Edakkal.
Ooty to Edakkal Caves: Ooty to Edakkal Caves distance is about 100 km. Take the Gudalur route (NH 67) out of Ooty town. From Gudalur, you have two options - first is via Nadugani and the second is via Sulthan Bathery. There are also bus services (TNSTC & KSRTC) from Gudalur/Ooty to Wayanad.
Bangalore/Mysore to Edakkal Caves : Take the Gundlupet-Sulthan Bathery route (NH212) from Mysore side. After passing Sulthan Bathery town, take the right diversion on the highway at Kolagappara that heads to Vaduvanchal. Midway, before the Ambalavayal town, take the left diversion towards the Edakkal Town. (See also Bangalore to Wayanad and Bangalore to Sulthan Bathery)
Kannur/Thalassery to Edakkal Caves : There are many alternate routes to Wayand. Take the Kuttiyadi - Korome Tharuvana route. This is a curvy section at ghats (after Kuttiyadi). At Tharuvana, take the Panamaram road. Further head towards Beenachi.
From Beenachi junction enter the national highway (NH 212), turn right towards Kalpetta direction (right). A little after you'll reach Kolagappara junction on the highway. At this junction turn left towards Ambalavayal. Ahead of Ambalavayal, you can see the left diversion towards Edakkal Town.
